Like most wines made from red grapes Zinfandel comes in a number of styles from light and juicy to blockbuster ‘killer’ zins but they have a common thread of ripe brambly fruit and in most cases a richness that makes them a good match for red meat and other hearty dishes, especially those with a hit of smoked chilli.

Pulse-based soups like this black bean soup are super-comforting and warming in chilly weather. I rustled it up to use a batch of black beans my neighbour Jenny Chandler had given me and wouldn’t claim for a moment it's authentic but it is good!

This lighted wreath which I bought in the sale at @coxandcox has been the best addition to my Christmas decs this year. When it arrived it was HUGE - I’d forgotten to take the measurements - but miraculously fitted perfectly over my bedroom mirror where it sheds a magical light over the room. Which of course makes it spendy for a snack but you could pull the same trick with lumpfish roe. The schnitzel would be a bit more of a hassle to make at home but it was very very good. Add a glass (or two) of champagne and the top notch company of @thaneeprince and you have the perfect Christmas lunch. (The pasta is always worth ordering but enough for two if you have other dishes so I’d share.)
